Grand Canyon trip August 2004

Lynn & I left Memphis Tuesday Aug 10th at 4 am heading west on I-40, destination, the Grand Canyon. We had decided to take along camping equipment including a large tent and just make this a fun trip and not rush like we always have in the past. We left with a large ice chest full of cokes, cookies, chips, and a variety of meats for sandwiches. After a gas stop we had a picnic lunch just west of Oklahoma City at a roadside picnic table. We made Santa Rosa New Mexico by 8:30 pm. After sixteen hours and 917 miles we were ready for some rest and sleep.

We  left Santa Rosa about 6:00am heading west on I-40 arriving at the Arizona border about eleven am. Just a few miles into Arizona we came to the entrance of the Painted Dersert and Petrified forest. We spent about 2 hrs there then left for Flagstaff  arriving there about  three  pm. We had met a fellow earlier that day that told us not to miss Monument Valley and the city of Sedona, it being only thirty miles south of Flagstaff.
After going down the "Canyon Road" to Sedona we dicided that we would camp for the night in one of the many state parks along the road back to Flagstaff  and leave early the next morning for the Grand Canyon. After a restless night in a tent on a cot we were in no mood to cook breakfast on a propane camp stove and couldn't wait to get out of the park and back on the road. This would be enough camping for us this trip.
We broke camp and left the campsite about 10 am and headed north stopping at McDonalds in Flagstaff for some hot coffee and their delicious buscuit sausage & egg sandwitch. We had had all the camp life that we wanted in just one night of "ruffing it".

We arrived at the South rim of the Canyon about two pm. There was quite a large crowd and parking spaces were hard to find. I have seen many pictures of the Grand Canyon and did not expect to see any thing much to talk about. As I stepped up to the rim of the Canyon for the first time the sight was almost unbeliveable. Until you see it in person and see the vast expanse of the Canyon and the time it must have took mother nature to carve all the sights can one put it into perspective with the millions of years it took to create such a beautiful sight.
After a picnic lunch at the edge of the Grand Canyon we left the area back toward the four corners area, when nightfall came we were ready for bed at Gallup, New Mexico. Still almost 900 miles from home we started wishing we had flown our plane instead of driving we would be only about five and a half hours from home instead of 17 or 18 hrs.
After leaving Gallup Saturday morning before daylight and a hard days Drive we made it back to Memphis  by 5:00pm and was ready to settle down for a good nights rest in our own bed.
